Silat, also known as Pencak Silat, Penca, Maen Po, Silek Tuo, (Old Style Silat) is general name for various indigenous martial art systems from South East Asia that include Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines Thailand and other areas . Pencak Silat can be understood as: ‘Pencak’ referring to the performance and dance aspect, while ‘Silat’ to the essence of fighting and self defense. Both aspects are intertwined and work mutually together to bring out the full fruit of the practice. Silat is known for its dynamic striking, limb destruction, bladed weapons and fighting multiple opponents with fluid, lightning like movements.
Pencak Silat Panglipur is a traditional martial arts system from Indonesia. The Knowledge of Panglipur is a blend of older streams in West Java and West Sumatra, founded by Bapak Abah Aleh in 1909 at Garut, Pencak Silat styles: Cimande, Pamonyet, Pamacan, Cikalong, Syabandar, Sera, Kari, Madi, Betawi and Sumatran Harimau styles. Pencak Silat Panglipur develops a healthy body, calm mind, the ability to defend oneself and family. The comprehensive curriculum includes both martial and healing aspects: self-defense, empty hands, weapons, breath work, massage, dance, medicine, music, yoga and meditation.
Some characteristics of the system include: hard/soft, fast/slow, and dynamic movements with footwork, as a guiding principle. Practicing in set forms called jurus; teaches students effective striking, the economy of power, awareness of multiple opponents. Balanced with the drilling of the self defense aspects, technical and freestyle sparring to pressure test students and prepare them for anything life throws at them. The dance aspect is called Ibing, which show-cases the various stylistic movements of the system. This is usually performed with live, traditional Indonesian music called Gendang.

Padepokan Kasundan has facilities that support the formulation of martial arts as a means to achieve the level of quality and right understanding of systems of silat in West Java.
